The Official Scale of Permissible Prejudice...

I think it's great that homophobic artists are being forced to cancel shows in the UK. Isn't it time though we did the same thing with artists who use misogynist lyrics, such as Eminem?

Here are some lyrics from "The Eminem Show", for which the noxious little misogynist won a Grammy:

"Now I don't wanna hit no women when this chick's got it coming
Someone better get this bitch before she gets kicked in the stomach
And she's pregnant, but she's egging me on, begging me to throw her
Off the steps on this porch, my only weapon is force"

Well I thought that was a progressive post-ironic take on, erm, something...

"...and I don't wanna resort to
any violence of any sort"

Quoting out of context being at the heart of all good journalism.

You're suggesting that Eminem isn't glorifying violence against women? It doesn't make any difference how you quote Eminem - he's a misogynist and his lyrics are offensive.

Eminems relationship with Kim Mathers and his mother are hardly healthy, and his two most mysoginistic songs "Kill You" and "Kim" certainly reflect that. I'm not sure that hatred of two individuals, who are women, makes him a mysoginist.

The verse you quote is about a man angry with a woman, and the decision to act on it or control it, makes all the difference.

That decision is in the line Dana Williams choses not to quote and that line certainly doesn't glorify violence against anyone.

Sorry hadn't followed the link when I originally commented, so any criticism I leveled at you is unfair

Lots of things are offensive, should we ban them all?

D12 (the band Eminem was in before he went solo) also had a lot of misogynist lyrics. For example this one re a pimp and 'his' prostitute:

"I don't give a fuck if you gotta go home to the kids
You shoulda picked another occupation trick
Now you're stuck with me, fuck with me
and I'ma slap you up in this truck
You must be out your mind or somethin
Cryin and whinin like you tired or somethin
Go suck some head until it aches for Bufferin"

and:

"And don't be askin me all kind of questions
All harassin me, callin stressin
Or I may have to release some aggression
Beat you to death and teach you a lesson"

Or these from the charmingly named song 'Bitch':

"Disrespect my wishes, i'll beat your ass"
"Hoe aint the only thing you call a girl
Slut, Tramp"

And there's another one that goes on about women only being good for cooking, cleaning and f*cking.

Surely no one can argue this isn't misogynist!
