The R-Word

Rape. Shhhh. I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it... and unsurprisingly yet more men are being given a golden opportunity to get away with it too. At least the UK government is vaguely looking into doing something, albeit totally half-hearted, about it.

My out-loud reaction to reading this story was definitely something the judge wouldn't have accepted in court.

It's a whole different world that judges and politicians live in - no rape, only sex; no wars, only "police actions"; no "you are lying", only "the honourable genetleman is being economical with the truth".

The judge in conversations with the counsels can indulge in legal jargon as much as he likes - I fail to see how justice is served by denying civilians the right to use well-understood direct words to describe what happened to them.

The more euphemism, the more people are distanced. And so rape and war become less abhorent and easier to commit.
